About the Role
We're looking for a Project Developer to join our Growth team on a full-time basis. Reporting to the Director, Development - Canada, you will play a key role in advancing TransAlta's growth strategy by leading thermal and renewable energy projects from early-stage development through to Final Investment Decision, ensuring a seamless transition into construction.
In this role, you will take ownership of project outcomes, working closely with internal subject matter experts and external stakeholders to move projects forward efficiently and strategically. You'll set development priorities, manage budgets and schedules, and proactively identify and mitigate risks-all while ensuring alignment with TransAlta's long-term objectives and commitment to delivering high-quality, competitive projects.
This position is based out of our Downtown Calgary Head Office, with the flexibility of a hybrid work schedule.
A Day in the Life
- Lead the day-to-day development of thermal and renewable energy projects from early-stage planning through to Final Investment Decision
- Coordinate with internal experts (engineering, commercial, regulatory, finance) to advance projects and resolve challenges
- Engage with external stakeholders including landowners, partners, regulators, and community representatives
- Develop and manage project schedules, budgets, and key deliverables to keep initiatives on track
- Identify, assess, and proactively mitigate development risks across all project stages
- Support commercial activities, including customer engagement and structuring of offtake agreements
- Oversee key development workstreams such as permitting, interconnection, land acquisition, and environmental studies
- Analyze market conditions and contribute to strategies that position projects for long-term success
- Present project updates, risks, and recommendations to senior leadership and cross-functional teams
About You
- Bachelor's degree in Business, Engineering, Environmental Sciences, or a related field (advanced degree considered an asset)
- 5+ years of progressive project development experience, with a track record of delivering projects from concept through to completion
- Experience across multiple energy technologies (thermal, wind, solar, storage) and jurisdictions (Alberta, Ontario, WECC) is an asset
- Proven ability to lead high-performing, cross-functional teams and advance complex projects to construction
- Strong commercial and strategic mindset, with the ability to analyze market trends and align projects to broader business objectives
- Excellent stakeholder management skills, with the ability to build trust across partners, regulators, communities, and internal teams
- Exceptional communication and presentation skills, including experience engaging senior leadership
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word) and project management tools such as MS Project or Primavera
- Highly motivated, results-driven professional with a strong ownership mindset and willingness to travel across North America as needed
