The Role
If you want your engineering to genuinely matter - shaping buildings that use less energy, generate less carbon, and improve lives for decades - this is the opportunity you've been waiting for. Cundall's Edinburgh team is at the forefront of low-energy design in the UK and internationally, and we're looking for a Senior Mechanical Engineer to help lead the charge.
You'll be trusted with real engineering responsibility from day one: leading mechanical design on diverse, high-profile projects from inception through to handover, and playing a central role in a collaborative, multi-disciplinary team that is serious about sustainability.
You will gain exposure to a diverse range of sectors, including Education, Healthcare, Government, Rail, Workplace, Residential, Critical Systems, and Defence, providing the opportunity to contribute to a variety of impactful projects and develop broad industry experience.
Whether you're a confident senior practitioner ready to take the next step, or a rising engineer who has demonstrated they're capable of more - we want to hear from you.
You will take ownership of the full mechanical design lifecycle - from early-stage concept through detailed design, specification and site handover - across a rich variety of building types and client profiles.
- Lead the design of mechanical building services: heating, ventilation, cooling, water services, drainage and automated controls
- Drive projects from inception to handover, making confident, well-reasoned engineering decisions independently
- Produce high-quality drawings, specifications and equipment schedules using industry-standard tools (AutoCAD, Revit)
- Carry out engineering calculations and analyses using recognised design principles and software
- Coordinate building services designs with structural, architectural and other engineering disciplines within the wider design team
- Represent Cundall professionally in client meetings, design team workshops and contractor discussions
- Monitor installation quality on site, manage snagging, and lead handover procedures
- Prepare clear, client-focused technical reports and support Principals and Associates with production information
- Critically evaluate and champion engineering solutions that align with decarbonisation and passive design principles
The Skills
We're looking for engineers who combine technical rigour with genuine curiosity. You'll be comfortable working autonomously on smaller commissions and as a collaborative team member on large, complex projects.
- At least 4 years' experience in a professional building services design consultancy
- A degree (or equivalent) in Mechanical, Building Services or Architectural Engineering
- A thorough understanding of RIBA Design stages and the level of information required at each gateway
- Proficiency in AutoCAD, Revit and the Microsoft Office suite
- A genuine passion for low-energy architecture, passive design strategies, and decarbonisation
- Membership of a relevant professional engineering institute (preferred) - or active progress toward it
- An interest in digital engineering and AI-assisted tools that improve project efficiency and accuracy
We know that to be the best at what we do we need a diverse workforce underpinned by an inclusive culture. Creating environments where everyone can find joy doing their best work is also great for everyone.
