Full Stack Software Engineer

Position

As a Backend Developer, you help build the backbone of Smappee's energy management platform. You develop and own a part of our platform that connects our energy solutions with households, businesses, installers and partners to manage energy smarter. While your main focus is on the backend, you also follow your work through to the user interface in React and TypeScript, giving you end-to-end ownership of the solutions you build. As our platform evolves, so can your focus, giving you the opportunity to grow your expertise while helping shape the future of our technology.

Responsibilities

• Design, build and maintain Java backend services in our cloud platform and you own a domain within it rather than passing through it
• Develop the APIs that our UI and our partners consume
• Build the front end on top of your own services in React and TypeScript
• Build and maintain the integrations the platform depends on, towards devices and towards the systems around us
• Act as third line support for your domain: you pick up escalated tickets, find the root cause and fix it in the product rather than in the ticket
• Work directly with product management, designers, firmware engineers, app developers and software testers and you help shape how we work rather than only what we ship

Requirements

• You have a bachelor's or master's degree in computer science, or equivalent experience
• You have at least five years of experience as a software engineer, with the weight of it on the backend
• You are strong in Java and comfortable with relational databases and SQL (MySQL, Postgres)
• You have built event driven and message based integrations (Kafka, MQTT or comparable) and REST APIs that you both consume and expose
• You are comfortable in React and TypeScript, enough to build and maintain a front end on top of your own services without needing someone else to finish it
• You are at ease in a cloud environment (AWS) and in a large modular codebase
• You can hold a full system in your head: hardware devices on one side, customers on the other and you reason clearly about what happens when one part of it goes offline
• You learn quickly and adapt. New domains, unfamiliar code and shifting priorities are part of the job and you help the people around you keep up as well
• You take ownership. An escalated issue in your domain stays yours until it is solved
