Customer Service jobs in renewable energy

Customer Service Jobs in Renewable Energy

Customer service in energy means handling the enquiries, billing disputes, meter readings, tariff changes, and fault reports that arrive from households and business accounts, and resolving them within rules a regulator enforces. It differs from customer service in most other industries in one important respect: the product is metered, regulated, and billed retrospectively, so a large share of contacts are about numbers the customer cannot verify without help.

The volumes involved are not small. Ofgem's supplier data records 936 complaints per 100,000 customer accounts across all British suppliers in Q2 2026, with medium-sized suppliers at 1,529 and small ones at 161. The spread between those figures is a recruitment story in itself: fast-growing suppliers generate complaints faster than they hire the people to close them.

What makes energy support technical

An agent on a supplier desk needs to read a meter register, explain an estimated bill, and know when a back-billing limit applies. Once a household adds solar panels, a battery, a heat pump, or an electric car, the conversations change shape. Feed-in remuneration, export meter registration, and time-of-use rates all generate questions that generic scripts cannot answer, which is why smart metering literacy has become a hiring filter rather than a nice-to-have.

Germany shows why. Since January 2025 every electricity supplier there must offer a dynamic tariff to customers who have a smart meter, yet the rollout is behind: the FfE counted 700,624 intelligent metering systems installed by 31 March 2025, a 15.1 per cent rate against a legal 20 per cent target for the end of that year. Every one of those installations produces a set of customer conversations about what the meter does, what the tariff costs, and why the bill now moves hour by hour.

Who is hiring, and for what

Berlin dominates the postings on Rejobs, largely because the German dynamic-tariff suppliers are based there. Rabot Energy and RABOT Charge recruit for B2B customer support specialists and Sachbearbeiter in Energiewirtschaft und digitale Prozesse, roles that combine service with meter data administration. 1KOMMA5° hires on the installer side, where the customer journey runs from quotation through commissioning to aftercare. Utilities and programme administrators add a different flavour: Southern California Edison and CLEAResult advertise customer energy programme advisers, essentially service roles that also explain efficiency incentives.

The titles reveal how the function is splitting. At one end sit frontline customer service representatives and care coordinators, several of them part-time or school-hours, as at PureVolt Solar in Cork. At the other end sit customer success engineers and customer operations managers who handle escalations with a technical component, plus team leads and a head of customer support. The middle is thinning, which is what happens when routine contacts move to automation.

A different model again operates outside Europe. Sun King, which sells pay-as-you-go solar systems in off-grid markets, runs customer service that is part device troubleshooting and part payment collection, conducted largely by phone across rural areas. It is the same tag and an unrecognisably different job.

Where the function is heading

Automation is removing the simplest contacts, not the job. One vacancy in this set is for a head of customer support described as AI-native, which is a reasonable summary of the direction: routine billing queries get deflected, and what remains is harder, more technical, and more regulated. That pushes value towards agents who can hold a conversation about a hybrid inverter or an energy efficiency measure, and towards people who can design the escalation paths rather than only work them. Service roles have long been a common entry point into the sector, and the technical ones still are.
