Energy storage hiring spans pure-play storage developers, integrated renewables companies, and legacy energy firms expanding their portfolios. On the residential and commercial side, sonnen leads in home battery systems from its base in Germany, while Sunrun combines rooftop solar with battery storage across the US. Skeleton Technologies, an Estonian supercapacitor manufacturer now building a factory in Germany, represents the growing demand for ultra-fast storage technologies that complement conventional batteries.

Where the jobs are concentrated

Berlin and Hamburg are the European hubs, reflecting Germany's aggressive push into storage alongside its Energiewende. London serves as a commercial and finance centre for storage developers operating across the UK and Europe. In the US, Houston has emerged as a major storage market -- partly because Texas overtook California as the largest state for new utility-scale deployments in 2025. San Francisco, New York, and Chicago round out the top US locations, driven by a mix of developer headquarters and regional grid needs. Melbourne is the leading hub in the Asia-Pacific region.

The skills gap problem

The IEA's World Energy Employment 2025 report flags a structural concern: across the electricity sector, retirements are outnumbering new entrants at a ratio of 1.4 to 1. Applied technical roles -- electricians, control engineers, plant operators -- are in especially short supply. For energy storage specifically, the challenge is compounded by the field's relative novelty: there are few established training pathways for battery technology specialists or power electronics engineers with storage experience.

This gap creates real opportunity for career switchers. Engineers from automotive, aerospace, or conventional power generation bring transferable skills in thermal management, electrical engineering, and systems integration. The global BESS market is projected to grow from roughly $10 billion in 2025 to over $86 billion by 2034, and the workforce needed to design, build, and operate those systems simply does not exist yet.

Beyond lithium-ion

While lithium-ion dominates current deployments, the storage sector is diversifying. Flow batteries offer longer-duration storage suited to grid balancing. Pumped hydro storage -- the oldest and still largest form of energy storage globally -- saw the highest job growth rate at 7.6% in 2024. Hydrogen storage is gaining traction for seasonal and industrial applications. Each technology creates distinct job profiles, from chemical engineers working on electrolyte formulations to civil engineers designing underground caverns. The cost of lithium-ion battery packs has fallen over 90% since 2010, but the next wave of storage jobs will increasingly come from these alternative technologies as grid operators seek longer-duration solutions.
