IT Operations & Support Jobs in Renewable Energy

IT operations and support runs the corporate technology of an energy company: networks, servers and cloud tenancies, identity and access, business systems such as ERP, and the helpdesk serving staff in offices and on site. Energy companies compete for these people with every other industry. Eurostat found that 57.5% of EU enterprises that tried to recruit ICT specialists in 2023 had difficulty filling the vacancies.

How energy IT differs from office IT

The work looks familiar on paper, but three features set it apart. First, the estate is spread out: a wind operator or a grid company supports staff in control rooms, warehouses, vessels, and remote substations as well as at headquarters, so network engineers and field support staff deal with satellite links, rugged devices, and sites that take a day to reach. Second, corporate IT sits next to operational technology, the control systems that run turbines and switchgear. The two are kept apart by design, and much of the work of a network or systems engineer in a utility is maintaining that boundary, which is why these roles overlap with cybersecurity and operational technology cybersecurity. Third, electricity, gas, district heating, and hydrogen are classed as critical sectors under the EU's NIS2 directive, which puts formal obligations for incident reporting and risk management on many energy companies and turns routine patching and access reviews into compliance work.

Typical listings include IT support specialists, senior network engineers, cloud engineers, IT project managers, business analysts, and architects for systems such as Microsoft Dynamics 365. Roles that build products rather than run infrastructure belong to software engineering and cloud and DevOps, though in smaller companies one team often does both.

Who is hiring

The largest employers in this category are metering, utility, and grid companies with big internal estates. Landis+Gyr, which makes smart meters and the software that reads them, posted the most roles in the past year. The Dutch grid operator Enexis, Vattenfall, the Berlin heat utility BEW, ScottishPower, EnBW, and Ørsted follow, alongside the supplier OVO Energy and the fusion developer Helion Energy.

Berlin carries the most listings by a wide margin, followed by Hamburg, London, Munich, and Glasgow, then Oslo and Gentofte near Copenhagen. Across Europe, Eurostat reports that 28.8% of enterprises in the electricity, gas, steam, and water supply sector employed ICT specialists of their own in 2024.

Skills that pay

A helpdesk role in an energy company is a legitimate way into the sector for people without an engineering degree, and the progression runs towards networks, identity, and cloud administration. The combination that commands a premium is conventional infrastructure skill plus an understanding of industrial networks, because the engineer who can segment a substation network or audit remote access to a wind farm is doing security work that most corporate IT teams never touch.
