Contract Management Jobs in Renewable Energy
Contract management in renewable energy covers the negotiation, execution, and administration of the commercial agreements that underpin every stage of a project - from power purchase agreements (PPAs) and EPC contracts to turbine supply deals, land leases, and long-term service arrangements. With 68 GW of corporate clean power deals contracted globally in 2024 alone - a 30% increase on 2023 - the volume and complexity of renewable energy contracts is growing faster than the workforce equipped to manage them.
What makes RE contract management distinct
Renewable energy contracts differ fundamentally from those in conventional energy or construction. A single wind farm involves layered agreements running simultaneously: the PPA with an offtaker (typically 10-20 years), the EPC contract with the constructor, turbine supply agreements with OEMs, O&M service contracts, grid connection agreements, and land lease arrangements with multiple landowners. Each operates on different timescales, risk profiles, and amendment triggers. Contract managers must hold the whole picture together while understanding enough technical detail to spot when a contractual clause conflicts with physical reality on site.
The shift toward hybrid projects - combining solar, wind, and battery storage in a single development - has added another layer. Hybrid PPAs require novel pricing structures and performance guarantees that did not exist five years ago. Contract managers who can structure these agreements are in particular demand.
Who hires and where
Contract management roles cluster around developers, IPPs, utilities, and EPC contractors. SSE Renewables, Scottish Power, and Vattenfall are among the largest European utilities actively hiring, alongside developers like BayWa r.e. and European Energy. In Germany, UKA Umweltgerechte Kraftanlagen and GP Joule both recruit heavily for contract management positions.
Geographically, Hamburg, Berlin, and Glasgow are the strongest European hubs, reflecting Germany's dominance in onshore wind development and Scotland's offshore wind pipeline. London and Aberdeen round out the UK market. Outside Europe, Houston, Sydney, and San Francisco show significant demand.
In-demand roles and variations
The most common titles are Contract Manager and Senior Contract Manager, but the function extends into adjacent roles. Legal counsel positions with a contracts focus make up a significant share of postings, as do Commercial Manager roles that blend contract oversight with broader business development. Procurement specialists and managers increasingly need contract management skills as renewable supply chains grow more complex, particularly for EPC management of utility-scale projects.
Market context and developments
Europe's corporate PPA market saw a record 316 long-term contracts signed in 2024, totalling 15.2 GW. Corporate buyers drove the surge, with their share rising to 5.2 GW - a 26% increase year-on-year. Each of these agreements requires dedicated contract management through negotiation, execution, and a decade or more of performance monitoring.
The complexity is intensifying. Cross-border PPAs, sleeved and virtual structures, and 24/7 carbon-free energy matching all demand contract professionals who understand both energy markets and commercial law. Meanwhile, the EU's renewable energy directive revisions and national permitting reforms are rewriting the regulatory backdrop that contracts must navigate, making regulatory compliance knowledge increasingly valuable.
Skills that command a premium
Employers consistently seek candidates with 5-10 years of experience in complex construction or energy project contracts. Familiarity with FIDIC and bespoke EPC terms is expected for development-stage roles, while operational contract management leans toward service agreements and vendor management. The professionals commanding the highest salaries combine legal training with technical literacy - they can read a turbine performance curve and a limitation of liability clause with equal fluency.
