Treasury & Financial Risk jobs in renewable energy

Treasury & Financial Risk Jobs in Renewable Energy

Treasury and financial risk covers how a renewable energy company keeps, borrows, and protects its cash: liquidity planning, corporate debt, hedging of interest rates and currencies, guarantees, and the insurance programme for its assets. The work matters more in renewables than in most industries because the business model is capital up front and revenue for decades afterwards, so a change in interest rates can decide whether a project is worth building at all.

Why the function has grown

The last three years made the point. When Ørsted abandoned its 2,400 MW Hornsea 4 offshore wind farm in May 2025, higher interest rates sat alongside supply chain costs among the reasons. Months later the company needed a DKK 60 billion rights issue, backed by the Danish state, to fund the Sunrise Wind project on its own balance sheet and strengthen its capital structure after a planned partial sale fell through. For developers with large construction pipelines, treasury has moved from the back office to the board agenda.

Currency risk is the other half of the job, and it is sharpest in emerging markets. The IEA's World Energy Investment 2025 notes that currency depreciation and higher interest rates have made debt harder to service, to the point where debt servicing costs in Africa equal over 85% of total energy investment there. Off-grid solar company d.light, which sells solar products on pay-as-you-go credit to households in Africa and Asia and collects payments in local currencies, is among the employers hiring treasury staff.

What the work involves

Treasury Manager and Treasury Analyst are by far the most common titles, followed by Senior Treasury Manager, Corporate Debt and Treasury Operations Manager, Treasury Accountant, and insurance specialists (Versicherungsexperte in German listings). A treasury analyst builds the cash forecast, runs payments and intercompany funding, and monitors covenants on corporate and project finance facilities. Managers negotiate bank lines, put interest rate swaps in place when a project loan is drawn, and manage the guarantees that turbine supply contracts and grid connections require. Insurance managers buy construction and operational cover and handle claims; in offshore wind, subsea cables accounted for more than half of insurance claims spend between 2010 and 2020, according to underwriter GCube.

The concept is narrower than it sounds. Project delivery risk and operational risk belong to risk management, and hedging of power prices sits with energy trading teams; treasury handles the financial side.

Who is hiring

Developers and independent power producers dominate: Hanwha Energy USA, Invenergy, RES, BayWa r.e., Northland Power, NextEra Energy, and Clearway Energy Group, alongside d.light, US solar developer Blue Sky Utility, and Australian grid company TransGrid. London, Houston, Montreal, Hamburg, Madrid, Glasgow, Paris, and Sydney are the main locations. Candidates come from bank treasury, corporate treasury in utilities, and audit; the Association of Corporate Treasurers qualifications in the UK and the CTP in the United States are the standard credentials, and familiarity with treasury management systems and IFRS 9 hedge accounting separates senior candidates from analysts.
