Welding & Fabrication Jobs in Renewable Energy

Welding and fabrication covers the workshop and factory trades that cut, form, and join metal into energy equipment: wind towers, pressure vessels, fuel cell and electrolyser housings, pipework, and the heavy steel structures of fusion machines. Most of these jobs are in manufacturing plants rather than on project sites, and in the United States they are hard to fill: the American Welding Society projects a need for 320,500 new welding professionals by 2029, around 80,000 openings a year across all industries.

What the work involves

Tower production is the clearest case. Arcosa Wind Towers builds towers by rolling steel plate into cans and joining them with long submerged arc welds. Plants of this kind run around the clock, which is why Welder I and Welder II posts come in first, second, third, and weekend shift variants, with pay steps tied to the processes and positions a welder is certified for. Fuel cell and hydrogen manufacturers Bloom Energy, Plug Power, and FuelCell Energy hire production welders and engineering fabricators for stainless steel enclosures, manifolds, and balance-of-plant pipework, with Bloom's plants in Newark, Delaware, and Fremont, California, among the top locations.

The most unusual employer is Commonwealth Fusion Systems, which posts more welding and fabrication roles than any other company and raised $863m in a single funding round in August 2025. It is building its SPARC tokamak at a 60-acre campus in Devens, Massachusetts, where the company itself lists welders alongside physicists and technicians. Fusion hardware such as vacuum vessels and magnet structures demands tight tolerances, precision TIG welding of stainless steel, and documented quality at every step, closer to aerospace than to structural steel. Nuclear fusion developers are small employers overall, but for a welder with that background they are among the few in energy doing one-off precision work.

In Europe the demand is thinner but specialised. Semco Maritime hires smiths and welders (smed og svejser) in Esbjerg, where it builds and services offshore energy installations, and the Austrian welding and solar inverter company Fronius recruits application technicians who configure and demonstrate welding systems for customers. Geothermal operator Ormat, thermal battery developer Antora Energy, and district energy company Vicinity Energy add smaller numbers of maintenance and fabrication roles.

Qualifications and how pay is set

Welders qualify by procedure and position, and the certificate matters more than the job title. In the United States the reference points are AWS D1.1 for structural steel and ASME Section IX for pressure equipment; in Europe welder qualification follows EN ISO 9606, with procedures qualified under EN ISO 15614. Welders certified for pipe in all positions, stainless steel and nickel alloys, or orbital TIG earn more and move between sectors most easily. A growing share of production work is robotic, and Robotic Welding Operator and Welding Engineer titles show where the trade is heading: programming, fixturing, and inspecting automated welds rather than laying every bead by hand.

Career paths

Experienced welders move into lead hand and supervisor roles, into welding inspection with a CWI or IWI qualification, or into quality assurance and control, where they sign off the work of others. Welding engineers, who write and qualify the procedures that everyone else welds to, sit at the top of the trade and are the hardest hires for plants bringing a new product into series production.
