Community Energy Jobs in Renewable Energy

Community energy is the ownership model in which citizens, local authorities, and small businesses hold the equity in a generation or supply asset and keep the revenue, rather than a distant developer collecting it. More than 8,000 energy communities now operate across the EU, according to the European Commission's count in the tenth State of the Energy Union report of November 2025, though only a minority of them employ anyone full time.

What the work is, and what it is not

The job is ownership engineering. Development officers write community share offers and the prospectuses that go with them, set out how a benefit society distributes surplus, and register the vehicle with the financial regulator. Asset managers run the metering, billing, and licensed-supply arrangements that let a cooperative sell power into its own streets instead of into the wholesale market. Project managers take a 500 kW roof scheme from site option to grid connection on a budget an order of magnitude smaller than a commercial developer's, with a volunteer board signing off each stage.

Consultation, planning meetings, and landowner negotiation used to sit under this heading. They now belong to community and stakeholder engagement, which every large developer staffs. Community energy is the narrower thing: building and running the ownership structure itself.

The UK sector in honest numbers

Britain has the densest community energy sector in Europe, and it is still small. The 2025 State of the Sector report counted 614 organisations across the UK running 411 MW of solar, wind, and hydro, generating 575 GWh during 2024, and employing 964 full-time equivalents between them. Eighty-eight of those posts were created that year.

Set against the 411 MW built, 379 MW of community capacity sat stalled, most of it held up by grid connection queues or missing development finance. That pairing tells a job seeker more than the generation figure does. The roles that get funded are the ones that unblock a queue position or close a finance round, which is why development and distributed energy resources experience is worth more here than a background in consultation.

Who is hiring

Three employer types recruit. Cooperatives and benefit societies form the core: Ecopower in Flanders, Enercoop in France, EWS Schönau in Germany, and Som Energia in Catalonia, which has grown past 85,000 members. Their European federation, REScoop.eu, represented about 2,500 cooperatives and two million citizens across 25 countries at the start of 2025.

Commercial developers built around shared ownership form the second group. Solar Landscape leases commercial rooftops in New Jersey and sells the output at a discount to nearby low- and moderate-income households, a model that has made it one of the larger community solar employers in the United States. The third group is supply-side: Good Energy buys from more than 2,500 independent UK generators and administers the country's largest voluntary feed-in tariff. Hiring concentrates in London, Glasgow, Hamburg, Berlin, Washington, D.C., and New York.

Where the field is heading

Great British Energy's Local Power Plan, published in February 2026, commits up to £1 billion over the spending review period to more than 1,000 local and community generation projects by 2030, against a pipeline of roughly 1.9 GW already in development. It is the largest public investment in community energy Britain has made, and it is measured in projects rather than gigawatts, which favours organisations that can start several small schemes over those chasing one large one. For anyone entering the field, that is the shape of the next four years: many small balance sheets, each needing someone who can read a grid offer and a share prospectus with equal confidence.
