Systems Engineering Jobs in Renewable Energy
Systems engineering is the discipline of turning what a machine or plant must do into written requirements, defining the interfaces between its electrical, mechanical, and software parts, and proving through integration and verification that the assembled whole meets them. In renewable energy the demand comes mainly from companies building complex products for the first time, and none more so than fusion developers: the fusion industry raised a record $4.48bn in the twelve months to July 2026, according to the Fusion Industry Association, taking its total since 2021 to $14.24bn.
Two jobs under one title
The title means two different things in this sector, and listings rarely say which. At product companies, a systems engineer owns the requirements baseline, the interface control documents, and the verification plan, usually following the V-model and increasingly working in model-based tools such as SysML. At grid operators and utilities, "system engineer" and "system studies engineer" usually mean power system analysis: load flow, short-circuit, and stability studies for connections and network reinforcement. That second role belongs to power systems engineering, and a candidate from one side rarely passes an interview for the other.
Who is hiring
The product side dominates the employer list. Helion Energy, Commonwealth Fusion Systems, and Thea Energy hire systems engineers to hold together machines in which magnets, power supplies, vacuum systems, diagnostics, and control software all constrain each other; nuclear fusion is the field where the discipline is closest to its aerospace roots. The same survey counts a fusion workforce of over 16,000 people, at companies none of which has yet delivered electricity to a grid, which is why integration experience from defence, space, or automotive programmes is prized.
Fuel cell makers Bloom Energy and Plug Power, inverter manufacturer Fronius, and smart meter specialist Landis+Gyr recruit for the same skills on products already in series production, where the work shifts towards variant management, certification, and field reliability. Battery cell maker Verkor, which opened its 16 GWh gigafactory near Dunkirk in December 2025, applies the discipline to production, where the system to be specified and verified is the cell line itself: machines, software, and process steps. Utilities such as Southern California Edison and Enexis post the power system study roles.
Locations follow the employers: Berlin, Hamburg, and Erlangen in Germany; Noida, Chennai, and Bengaluru, where multinationals run engineering centres; San Jose and Albany in the United States; and Glasgow and London in the UK.
Skills that command a premium
Common titles include Senior Systems Engineer, Lead Systems Engineer, Systems Integration Engineer, and Reliability Engineer, and the last is a frequent neighbour: reliability analysis (FMEA, fault trees, availability modelling) is often part of the same job. Engineers who combine requirements management with a working understanding of power electronics, high-voltage safety, or functional safety standards such as IEC 61508 are rarer than either specialist. As fusion companies move from experimental devices to pilot plants and battery and electrolyser makers scale up production, the question employers ask shifts from "does it work" to "can it be licensed, built, and maintained", and that question is answered by systems engineers.
