What They Do

Snowy Hydro's core technology focus is on pumped hydro-electricity, gas-fired peaking, diesel peaking, and contracted wind and solar renewables. The company operates 16 power stations and one pumping station, boasting a total generating capacity of over 5,500 MW dispatched to the National Electricity Market (source: snowyhydro.com.au). The Snowy Mountains Hydro-electric Scheme, which is a significant part of their operations, features nine hydro-electric power stations and 16 dams linked by 145 km of tunnels and 80 km of aqueducts, primarily located in Kosciuszko National Park. Additionally, Snowy Hydro manages water storage and diversion under the Snowy Water Licence for irrigation to the Murray and Murrumbidgee systems (source: wikipedia.org).

Projects & Track Record

Snowy Hydro has a rich history of notable projects, including the original Snowy Mountains Hydro-electric Scheme, which was completed in 1974 and delivered a total output of 3,740 MW from seven power stations, such as Guthega, which began operations in 1955 (source: snowyhydro.com.au). The company also operates significant gas assets, including the Colongra Power Station (667 MW, acquired in 2015), Laverton North (320 MW), and Latrobe Valley (300 MW) in Victoria, along with three diesel stations in South Australia totaling 136 MW (source: wikipedia.org). Currently, major projects include Snowy 2.0, which aims to link the Tantangara and Talbingo dams via a 27 km underground tunnel and establish a new pumped-hydro station for 2,000 MW generation and 175 hours of storage, with construction having commenced in 2019 (source: snowyhydro.com.au).

Recent Developments

In March 2018, the Australian Government acquired full ownership of Snowy Hydro by purchasing shares from New South Wales and Victoria, solidifying its status as a wholly-owned Commonwealth entity (source: snowyhydro.com.au). The construction of Snowy 2.0 is a significant advancement in the company's portfolio, marking it as a nation-building pumped-hydro project that commenced in 2019 (source: snowyhydro.com.au). About the position

Are you a strategic procurement leader looking to make a massive impact on one of Australia's largest infrastructure projects? We are seeking a highly skilled Procurement Manager to join the Snowy 2.0 team.

This is not a standard, business-as-usual procurement job. This role is uniquely split into two critical workstreams: you will be the driving force behind direct procurement for Snowy Hydro Limited (SHL), while also providing high-level governance, leadership, and oversight over our key delivery partners

Key Responsibilities

1. Direct Procurement (SHL Owner's Team)

  • End-to-End Sourcing: Lead all internal direct procurement activities to meet the precise needs of the Snowy 2.0 project.
  • Strategy & Execution: Partner with project leadership to develop robust contracting strategies, define scopes of work, and drive market engagement.
  • Tendering & Negotiation: Run full tender processes, present sourcing recommendations, and negotiate favourable rates and terms for SHL.
  • Risk Management: Ensure strict probity, compliance with organizational policies, and minimize risks, particularly regarding Modern Slavery Act obligations.

2. Governance & Oversight (Delivery Partners)

  • Strategic Leadership: Provide oversight and formal approval for the procurement activities undertaken by our delivery partners.
  • Break Down Silos: Facilitate a truly integrated approach across our delivery partners, ensuring efficient processes that add tangible project value.
  • Monitor & Guide: Work closely with our delivery partners to review and develop their procurement plans, tenders, and contract adjustments.
  • Maintain Visibility: Chair regular procurement meetings, establish clear reporting dashboards, and sit in on major tender adjudications and awards.
  • Global Reach: Please note, this role may involve occasional travel to our delivery partners' home locations in Europe!

About the location

This role will be located at our Head Office in Cooma, NSW, working Monday to Friday, we can look at a FIFO arrangement or relocation for the right candidate

About you

  • The Infrastructure Specialist: You have a proven track record leading procurement for complex, large-scale infrastructure programs (typically $100M+ in value), with a deep understanding of the project lifecycle from early works to commission.
  • The Negotiation Master: You possess exceptional influencing skills and the commercial gravitas to partner with international delivery leaders (like FJGV and Voith), securing favorable terms while maintaining productive, long-term partnerships.
  • The Commercial Strategist: You have a sharp analytical mind and a solid grasp of Contract Law, allowing you to define robust scopes of work, evaluate complex risk profiles, and ensure total probity throughout the sourcing process.
  • The Supply Chain & Logistics Guru: You are savvy in the intricacies of international shipping and logistics, ensuring critical long-lead items reach the site safely and on schedule.
  • The Leadership Catalyst: You are more than a technical expert; you are a culture-builder. You lead with a safety-first mindset and have a flexible interpersonal style that allows you to break down silos and drive integration across diverse teams
