Project Management Jobs in Renewable Energy

Project management in renewable energy is the delivery accountability for a wind farm, solar plant, battery site, or grid upgrade: owning its scope, schedule, budget, and the coordination of everyone who builds it. It is the most frequently tagged discipline on Rejobs, and the pressure behind it is measurable. The IEA's World Energy Employment 2025 counts 76 million energy jobs worldwide and reports that around 60% of energy companies face labour shortages that put timelines and cost control at risk, which is precisely what a project manager is hired to protect.

What the job looks like in this sector

The title is generic; the work is not. A project manager on an onshore wind farm in Germany spends months on grid connection dates, turbine delivery slots, and crane logistics on forest access roads. A utility-scale solar project in Texas or New South Wales is a different problem: hundreds of subcontractor crews, tracker and module deliveries by the thousand, and a commissioning date tied to a power purchase agreement. What unites them is that a slipped milestone rarely costs only money, because it can also cost a grid slot or a subsidy deadline.

The career splits along the project lifecycle. Development-phase managers work through land, permitting, and grid studies until a project is ready to build. Construction-phase managers run civil works, electrical installation, and commissioning, often inside an EPC contract (engineering, procurement, and construction under one wrapper). Around them sits a support layer of project engineers, coordinators, document controllers, and project controls and cost estimation specialists, and those roles are the usual entry route into the field.

Who hires project managers

The biggest hirers in the past year span every type of company in the sector. SOLV Energy builds utility-scale solar and storage across the United States, while UKA develops and builds onshore wind from its base near Dresden. Grid companies are just as active: Australia's TransGrid and the Dutch distribution operator Enexis both hire project managers in large numbers for transmission lines, substations, and network reinforcement. Manufacturers such as Nordex and Siemens Energy need them for turbine and grid equipment delivery, and utilities such as Iberdrola and ScottishPower run whole programmes of them. By location, Berlin and Hamburg carry more project management listings than any other cities on Rejobs, followed by Glasgow, Sydney, London, and Houston.

Where the premium lies

The IEA also finds that demand for applied technical workers grew 16% between 2015 and 2022 while graduations from the relevant vocational programmes grew only 9%. The shortage is not confined to the trades: project managers who can read an electrical single-line diagram, challenge a contractor's schedule, and negotiate a grid connection agreement are scarcer than those with a certificate alone. That is why so many managers in the sector arrive from site engineering or electrical design, and why the next step for experienced ones is usually programme leadership across a portfolio of sites.
