    Infrastructure development in renewable energy covers the planning, permitting, and construction of the physical systems that move clean power from where it's generated to where it's used: transmission lines, substations, distribution networks, interconnectors, and the IT backbone running it all. It's the discipline that turns approved projects into energised assets. With over 1,700 GW of renewable and hybrid projects stuck in grid connection queues across Europe, infrastructure work has become the single biggest bottleneck holding back the energy transition.

    What these roles actually do

    The job titles in this category split into two camps. The larger group is physical-asset work: project managers, civil and electrical engineers, substation engineers, permitting specialists, and works-preparation roles (the Dutch Werkvoorbereider) running multi-year buildouts. The second is the digital backbone: IT infrastructure engineers, DevOps, cloud, and platform specialists keeping SCADA systems, asset registers, and trading platforms online. Senior project manager roles dominate the listings because lead times are long, capital exposure is high, and stakeholder coordination spans landowners, regulators, distribution system operators, and contractors.

    Why the market is overheated

    The IEA estimates grid investment needs to nearly double to over USD 600 billion per year by 2030 to keep pace with renewable deployment, and Europe alone spent around USD 105 billion on grids in 2025. The UK's Great Grid Upgrade, anchored by the £4.3 billion Eastern Green Link 2, is the largest electricity transmission investment in Great Britain's history. That capital flows directly into hiring: every gigawatt of new wind or solar capacity needs corresponding grid connection, transmission and distribution, and grid modernization work, and the people who can deliver it are scarce.

    Who's hiring

    Transmission system operators sit at the top of the demand curve. TransGrid in Australia, Enexis in the Netherlands, and SSE Renewables in the UK each run multi-year infrastructure programmes with continuous senior project manager and engineering hiring. Specialist EPC and consultancy firms like KODIAK GmbH and GP Joule handle the design and execution side, particularly across the German market where the BauingenieurIn role is in chronic shortage. Pumped hydro operator Snowy Hydro and metering vendor Landis+Gyr round out the mix, showing that infrastructure work spans both legacy utilities and pure-play tech vendors.

    Where the field is heading

    The European Grids Package, adopted in December 2025, is rewriting the rules of grid connection queues, replacing the "first-ready first-serve" model with priority lanes for mature projects and penalties for non-delivery. That changes which skills command a premium: project developers who can demonstrably hit milestones, permitting and consenting specialists, and engineers fluent in EPC management will see the strongest wage growth through the rest of the decade. Geographic hotspots cluster around Germany (Hamburg, Berlin, Cologne, Augsburg), the UK's Scottish corridor (Glasgow, Aberdeen, Inverness, Perth) where offshore wind landfalls drive substation buildout, and Sydney where TransGrid's Project EnergyConnect anchors a hiring wave.
