Heat Pumps Jobs in Renewable Energy

Heat pump professionals survey, design, install, and service air-source, ground-source, and water-source systems that move heat from outside air, the ground, or water into buildings, replacing gas and oil boilers. After a slump in 2024, the market recovered: residential heat pump sales across 16 European countries rose 10.3% to 2.62 million units in 2025, according to the European Heat Pump Association, taking the installed base in those markets above 28 million.

Where the jobs are

Germany dominates the listings on Rejobs by a wide margin, with Berlin, Hamburg, Augsburg, and the Munich suburbs at the top. Heat pumps made up almost half of all heat generators sold in Germany in 2025, and the typical opening there is for an Anlagenmechaniker SHK, the German plumbing, heating, and air-conditioning tradesperson, or a Meister who can sign off installations and run crews. The UK is smaller but growing faster in relative terms: sales rose 27% to around 125,000 units in 2025. The Nordics lead per household, with Finland, Norway, and Sweden each selling more than 30 heat pumps per 1,000 households a year, but their markets are mature and hire mostly for service.

What the work involves

Installation is the core of the trade: removing a boiler, mounting an outdoor unit, running refrigerant or water circuits, upsizing radiators where needed, and wiring the system, which is why employers look for both heating fitters and electrical installers. The work before and after matters as much. Surveyors calculate a building's heat loss room by room, because an undersized unit leaves customers cold and an oversized one cycles inefficiently. Designers pick flow temperatures and emitters, commissioning engineers set up controls, and service technicians handle warranty calls. The EU's revised F-gas rules are pushing manufacturers towards natural refrigerants such as propane, so installers increasingly need training in handling flammable refrigerants safely.

Who is hiring

Installer platforms that bundle rooftop solar, batteries, and heat pumps post the most roles. 1KOMMA5°, headquartered in Hamburg, has grown by acquiring regional installers and hires fitters, Meister, site helpers, and sales staff across Germany, and the franchise network enerix recruits people to set up local PV and heat pump businesses. In the UK, Octopus Energy runs its own installation arm and trains new heat pump engineers, while Vattenfall and Essent sell heat pumps alongside energy supply in Germany and the Netherlands. In the United States, Brightcore Energy and Zero Homes install ground-source and air-source systems.

Routes in and what pays

Most employers accept career changers. German listings openly invite Quereinsteiger, people from other trades, and UK installers commonly retrain from gas boiler work through short manufacturer or college courses. The better-paid roles combine the trade with design or advisory skills, such as heat loss surveying, building energy performance assessment, or large-scale heat pumps for district heating, where industrial units of several megawatts replace gas plant. Ground-source work links the field to the wider geothermal energy sector.
