Solar Operations & Maintenance jobs in renewable energy

Solar Operations & Maintenance Jobs in Renewable Energy

Solar operations and maintenance (O&M) is the work of keeping photovoltaic plants producing after they are built: monitoring output, finding and fixing faults, servicing inverters and trackers, and managing the site for the 25 to 35 years a plant runs. Every new installation adds to that workload permanently, and the European base is growing fast: the EU's solar fleet reached an estimated 406 GW in 2025, up from 338 GW a year earlier.

What solar O&M technicians do

The job divides into preventive and corrective work. Preventive maintenance means thermographic inspections (often by drone) to find hot spots in modules, torque checks on mounting structures, inverter and transformer servicing, and vegetation management on utility-scale solar sites. Corrective work starts with an alarm in the monitoring system: a string that stopped producing, an inverter that tripped, a tracker stuck at the wrong angle. The technician's value lies in diagnosing the fault quickly, since a central inverter down for a week on a 100 MW site costs the owner revenue every sunny hour.

Operations is the office half of the role. Control room staff watch fleets through SCADA and monitoring platforms, compare actual against expected yield, schedule crews, and manage warranty claims with module and inverter suppliers. Performance engineers go one level deeper, separating losses caused by soiling, degradation, clipping, or curtailment. On residential systems the balance shifts to service calls and electrical troubleshooting, which is why many advertised roles are for licensed electricians rather than dedicated O&M technicians.

Employers hiring solar O&M staff

Much of this work is outsourced. In a 2025 survey of more than 400 solar manufacturers, installers, and technicians commissioned by the test-equipment maker Fluke, 54% of US firms said they outsource most of their maintenance, and almost 90% of Spanish and German firms planned to keep doing so, citing a shortage of skilled staff. That leaves demand split between owners and specialist service providers.

In Europe, Voltalia runs O&M for its own plants and for third parties, and the French solar company IRISOLARIS hires maintenance technicians across southern France, where roving roles (technicien de maintenance itinérant) are common. In the United States, SOLV Energy, NextEra Energy, and Invenergy recruit field technicians for large solar and storage fleets, while Sunrun and Venture Solar hire service technicians and electricians for residential systems.

Skills that command a premium

The strongest candidates combine an electrical qualification with diagnostic skill on the specific equipment in the field: string and central inverters, single-axis trackers, and medium-voltage switchgear. Experience with batteries is becoming a differentiator, as more solar plants add storage on the same connection, and technicians who can service both move easily into battery energy storage systems roles. Drone thermography and data analysis skills lead towards performance engineering and asset management.

The same survey found that 30% of companies still run a reactive maintenance strategy or none at all. As the European fleet ages, that gap is where the next wave of O&M contracts will come from, and it is part of what makes solar energy one of the steadier employers in renewables once construction ends.
