Concentrated solar power jobs

Mirrors, molten salt and steam turbines rather than photovoltaics, so the work leans on heat transfer and thermodynamics. National labs post many roles, and gas, coal and nuclear plant staff move across easily. About the job market

Concentrated Solar Power jobs in renewable energy

Concentrated Solar Power Jobs in Renewable Energy

Concentrated solar power (CSP) uses heliostats or parabolic troughs to focus sunlight onto a receiver, heat a fluid, and drive a steam turbine, usually with molten-salt storage that keeps the plant generating after sunset. That storage is its whole argument against cheaper photovoltaics. It is also a small industry: global CSP capacity stood at 7.2 GW at the end of 2024, according to REN21, against hundreds of gigawatts of new solar PV every year.

What the work involves

A CSP plant is a thermal power station with a solar front end, and most of its jobs look like power plant jobs. Solar-field engineers design and calibrate heliostat or trough layouts, tracking controls, and mirror cleaning regimes. Receiver and heat-transfer engineers deal with molten salt or thermal oil at several hundred degrees, freeze protection, and the thermal fatigue of pipes and tanks. The power block needs steam cycle, turbine, and balance-of-plant engineers, and the whole site needs operators who can run a plant through cloud transients and long storage discharges. The skill set sits much closer to Thermal Engineering and Mechanical Engineering than to PV electrical design, which is why people from gas, coal, and nuclear plants move into CSP more easily than PV installers do.

Where the plants are being built

China is the only market building CSP at volume. It connected nine CSP plants totalling 900 MW in 2025, bringing its fleet to 27 plants and 1,738 MW, third in the world, with around 25 more projects and 3,000 MW in substantive construction, mostly in Qinghai, Gansu, Xinjiang, and Inner Mongolia. Many are paired with large PV and wind bases, where the CSP plant supplies firm evening output. Spain still holds the largest fleet at 2.3 GW, but it added nothing in 2024, so Spanish CSP jobs are now mainly in operations, maintenance, and retrofits at plants built a decade or more ago. The Middle East and North Africa, from Morocco's Noor complex to the Gulf, is the other region with operating plants and engineering demand.

Who hires

Listings on Rejobs for this category are few, and many sit in research. National laboratories in Golden, Colorado, and Albuquerque, New Mexico, recruit postdoctoral researchers on collectors and receivers, and European solar research institutes run similar programmes, feeding into Research & Development careers rather than plant jobs.

The more interesting industrial hiring is in solar heat for industry, which uses the same concentrating optics without the turbine. GlassPoint designs, builds, owns, and operates solar steam systems for industrial sites, including a large project for Saudi mining group Ma'aden. Norway's Kyoto Group builds the Heatcube, a molten-salt thermal battery that stores heat for processes between 150 and 300°C, a direct descendant of CSP storage technology.

Career outlook

CSP is a niche with specialised skills and a thin job market outside China and the Gulf. Engineers who know molten-salt systems, high-temperature materials, and thermal storage have options beyond CSP itself, because the same expertise is now sought for industrial heat and storage projects across Solar Energy and energy storage. That transferability, rather than a revival of European tower plants, is the realistic basis for a career in the field.
