Piping Engineering jobs in renewable energy

Piping Engineering Jobs in Renewable Energy

Piping engineering is the design discipline behind a plant's pipework: routing pipes in a 3D model, selecting materials and wall thicknesses, calculating stresses from pressure, temperature, and supports, and producing the isometric drawings that fabricators and pipefitters build from. It is desk and model work, distinct from the hands-on trade of pipefitting, and in renewable energy it concentrates in plants that move gases and liquids under pressure: hydrogen and electrolysis, biogas, geothermal and district heating, and thermal storage.

Hydrogen sets the tone

Hydrogen is the clearest source of new work, and the most demanding. The gas embrittles common carbon steels, leaks through joints that would hold natural gas, and forces a choice of materials and welding procedures under dedicated codes such as ASME B31.12 alongside the general process piping code ASME B31.3 or its European equivalent EN 13480. A piping engineer on an electrolysis plant also deals with ultrapure water loops, lye or cooling circuits, and oxygen lines, each with its own material and cleanliness rules.

The market behind it is real but smaller than the headlines once suggested. The IEA's Global Hydrogen Review 2025 puts installed water electrolysis capacity at 2 GW in 2024, with China holding 65% of it, and cuts potential low-emissions hydrogen production by 2030 from 49 to 37 million tonnes a year as projects are delayed or cancelled. For piping engineers that means fewer giant projects than planned, but steady work on the plants that do reach a final investment decision.

Who is hiring

This is a small category, and the employers are specialists. German hydrogen and gas plant builder BEN-Tec in Emsdetten hires CAD designers for hydrogen projects, and electrolyser makers Sunfire, Ohmium, and Plug Power, along with fuel cell maker Bloom Energy, recruit piping and process design engineers for their products and packaged plants. In the United States, geothermal heating installers Dandelion Energy and Brightcore Energy hire for ground loop and building piping design in New York State, district energy company Vicinity Energy for steam distribution networks, and advanced reactor developer Kairos Power for its facilities in Albuquerque. Wärtsilä adds engine power plant work.

Titles include Lead Piping Engineer, Mechanical Designer, Senior Process Design Engineer, and in French listings Ingénieur Tuyauterie, while German listings advertise Konstrukteur roles in process plant engineering (Verfahrenstechnischer Anlagenbau).

Skills that command a premium

The core toolkit is a 3D plant design system such as AVEVA E3D, Plant 3D, or SmartPlant, a stress analysis package such as CAESAR II, and working knowledge of ASME B31.3 or EN 13480. Engineers who add hydrogen material selection, pressure equipment rules under the EU Pressure Equipment Directive, and experience of hazardous area layouts are rarer than general piping designers from oil, gas, and chemicals. Those industries remain the main source of experienced hires, and the work sits close to chemical and process engineering and mechanical engineering. Engineers who move across usually find that the codes and tools are familiar and the fluids are the new part.
