Power-to-X & E-fuels Jobs in Renewable Energy

Power-to-X converts renewable electricity into molecules rather than electrons: hydrogen first, then the e-methanol, e-kerosene, and renewable ammonia used by ships, aircraft, and chemical plants where direct electrification does not work. A PtX plant is a chemical works with a power trader attached, and it runs when electricity is cheap rather than when the order book asks.

Denmark holds the reference site. European Energy's Kassø facility near Aabenraa was inaugurated in May 2025 with 52 MW of electrolysers and capacity for up to 42,000 tonnes of e-methanol a year, contracted to Maersk for methanol-fuelled vessels, to the LEGO Group as a plastics feedstock, and to Novo Nordisk. A single plant is close to the entire commercial e-methanol industry, which is a fair measure of how early this field still is.

What separates PtX work from ordinary process engineering

Three disciplines have to sit in the same room. The electrolysis side determines how much hydrogen is available, at what purity, and at what pressure. The synthesis side is conventional chemical and process engineering and wants a steady feed. The power side decides whether running is economic at all in a given hour. Add the carbon source, since e-methanol and e-kerosene need biogenic or captured CO2 in quantity, and buffer hydrogen storage to absorb the mismatch between an intermittent electrolyser and a synthesis loop that dislikes being stopped. Candidates who understand only one of those layers tend to stall at interview.

The regulatory pull is concrete rather than aspirational. ReFuelEU Aviation obliges fuel suppliers to blend 1.2% synthetic aviation fuel from 2030, rising to 5% in 2035 and 35% by 2050. Supply is the difficulty. Transport & Environment counts 41 large-scale e-SAF projects under development in Europe with roughly 3 million tonnes of potential output, and none had reached a final investment decision at the time of its assessment. Careers here therefore split between a small operating cohort and a much larger development cohort whose projects may never be built.

Who hires, and for what

Hiring on Rejobs is dominated by developers rather than equipment vendors. European Energy accounts for most of the listings, spanning plant operations at Kassø, offtake and tender management, corporate finance, and a head-of-function role. ENERTRAG, a German wind and hydrogen developer, posts project management and offtake positions for hydrogen and its derivatives. France's ELYSE ENERGY recruits industrial safety and environmental engineers for e-fuel projects. Universities supply the remainder: Aarhus Universitet and TU Delft advertise doctoral and postdoctoral posts in plasma electrolysis and CO2 hydrogenation reactors.

Two things follow from that mix. Commercial roles are unusually senior for such a young sector, because signing a fifteen-year methanol offtake is where the risk actually sits. And process safety carries real weight: methanol is toxic, ammonia worse, so HAZOP experience and ATEX competence move a CV up the pile faster than modelling skill does.

Geographically the work clusters in Denmark and northern Germany, with Berlin, Esbjerg, Gentofte, and Kassø recurring, alongside Madrid and Delft. Danish or German is frequently expected for operations posts and rarely for research ones. The technician route deserves more attention than it receives: a plant operator at Kassø needs process-plant experience rather than a doctorate, and very few people in Europe have yet run an e-methanol plant for a full year.
