Process Safety Jobs in Renewable Energy
Process safety is the engineering discipline that stops fires, explosions, and toxic releases arising from how a plant handles hazardous substances and stored energy. It is not the same job as occupational safety, which counts slips, falls, and lost-time injuries, and the distinction matters commercially: a site can go three years without a recordable injury and still be one failed interlock away from destroying itself. The EU's Seveso III regime covers more than 11,000 industrial installations, and the Commission's 2025 implementation report recorded fewer than 22 major industrial accidents a year across them between 2019 and 2022.
Why renewables inherited a process industry problem
A wind farm has almost no process safety content. A 100 MW electrolyser, a biogas digester, an ammonia synthesis loop, a biodiesel plant, or a cell manufacturing line has a great deal, and the energy transition has been quietly building all of them. Hydrogen is the clearest case. It ignites across a very wide range of concentrations in air and burns with a flame that is hard to see, which makes leak detection and area classification the whole ballgame rather than a compliance annex.
There is a hazard specific to renewables that the oil and gas playbook does not contain. ISPT's 2025 process safety study of green hydrogen production, built on a 1 GW plant design, identified membrane degradation caused by frequent start-up and shutdown cycling as a named risk, and the thing driving that cycling is the variability of the wind and solar supply feeding the electrolyser. Intermittency is not just a market problem. It is a mechanical integrity problem, and the study's conclusion is that the risk is manageable precisely because petrochemical risk assessment methods transfer, provided someone actually applies them.
What the work involves
The core toolkit is unchanged from the chemical industry: HAZOP studies to interrogate a design line by line, layer of protection analysis, safety integrity levels assigned under IEC 61511, ATEX and DSEAR zoning for explosive atmospheres, and the management of change discipline that catches the modification nobody reassessed. What is new is the pace. Many renewable developers are building first-of-a-kind plants with teams who have never held a safety case, which is why titles such as Process Safety Engineer and Process Safety Management Coordinator sit next to Senior Reliability Engineer in the same organisations.
Who hires
The employers posting under this tag show the shape of the field. Sunfire recruits in Solingen for electrolyser work, Nordex in Rostock, and Enel Green Power in Madrid and Tajonar, including a mechanical integrity and fire systems role. In the United States, thermal storage developer Antora Energy in San Jose, solid-state cell maker Solid Power in Colorado, and biogas operator Maas Energy Works in California all hire for it, alongside smaller UK consultancies such as Ceiba Renewables.
This is one of the strongest transfer routes out of oil and gas. A refinery process safety engineer already owns the method, and what they need to add is the specific behaviour of hydrogen, lithium cells, and digester gas rather than a new discipline. The combination that pays best is chemical and process engineering depth with functional safety certification, and increasingly with battery manufacturing experience, because gigafactory lines are where the hazard volume is growing fastest.
