Product Management Jobs in Renewable Energy

Product managers in renewable energy own what gets built and in what order: the roadmap, the customer discovery, and the commercial lifecycle of a tariff platform, a charging app, a home battery, or an electrolyser range. The discipline arrived late in this sector. Renewables employed 16.6 million people worldwide in 2024, and for most of that expansion companies recruited engineers, developers, and site crews, treating software as an internal cost rather than something to sell. That calculation changed once utility platforms became products in their own right: Kraken, spun out of Octopus Energy, is now contracted to manage more than 70 million customer accounts and carries 500 million dollars in committed annual revenue.

Software products and hardware product lines

Two quite different jobs share the title. The software side covers billing and settlement engines, flexibility and virtual power plant platforms, asset performance monitoring, and field service tooling, and the work looks like product management anywhere else: discovery, prioritisation, release cadence measured in weeks. Recent listings under this tag include Product Manager for Energy Billing, Product Manager for Substation Design Automation, and AI Product Owner.

The hardware side runs on multi-year cycles where a single decision locks a bill of materials, a supplier, and a certification path. Product Manager for Large Scale Electrolysers is a different profession from Product Manager Platform even inside the same company, and the two rarely swap. Candidates who apply for one assuming the other tends to fail the second interview on cadence questions alone.

Who is hiring

The roles cluster in a handful of cities: Berlin leads current listings, ahead of London, Paris, Bristol, and Hamburg. Employers fall into four groups. Grid operators and retailers build in house, as Enexis does in the Netherlands. Platform companies such as Kaluza sell software to utilities, so their product managers answer to external customers with procurement cycles. Consumer hardware firms combine devices with financing, which is how Sun King reaches off-grid households, and installers turned technology companies, 1KOMMA5° among them, manage an app and a heat pump as one proposition. Project developers such as ib vogt also hire product managers, though there the product is often internal tooling rather than anything sold.

What the domain adds

Every decision here runs into physics or regulation before it runs into a user. A tariff cannot settle faster than the metering standard permits. A charging feature depends on protocol support already baked into hardware bolted to a kerb. A grid-side product ships only if it satisfies the connection code of each market it enters, and those codes differ across borders that a software roadmap would rather ignore. Learning this takes months, which is why employers increasingly recruit from inside the sector rather than from consumer technology, and why fluency in market mechanics is worth more than another framework.

The money behind that is not speculative. EU spending on electricity grids is set to exceed 70 billion dollars in 2025, roughly double the level of a decade ago, and a growing share funds monitoring, automation, and customer-facing systems rather than copper. Each of those budgets eventually needs someone to decide what ships first.

Skills that command a premium

The combination employers pay for is narrow: ordinary product craft, plus enough electricity market knowledge to argue with a trading desk, plus the ability to read an engineering constraint without asking for a translation. Software engineering and UX and product design are the adjacent functions most product managers here work with daily, and several arrived from one of them.

Entry points remain scarce. Of the twenty most recent job titles collected under this tag, one was an associate role and one an internship; the rest sat at manager, head, or director level. Product management in energy is still largely a second career, entered by people who already know either the product trade or the industry, and then learn the other on the job.
