Power System Protection jobs in renewable energy

Power System Protection Jobs in Renewable Energy

Power system protection engineers design, set, and test the relays and schemes that detect faults such as short circuits and earth faults within milliseconds, so that only the faulty section of a network disconnects while the rest stays energised. Renewables have made the discipline harder, and the evidence is concrete: during a routine fault in West Texas in June 2022, 1,711 MW of inverter-based generation reduced output unexpectedly because of the protection and control settings at individual solar sites, according to NERC.

Why renewables change the job

Classic protection relies on a simple physical fact: when a fault occurs, a synchronous generator pushes a very large current into it, and an overcurrent or distance relay sees that current and trips. Inverter-based wind, solar, and battery plants supply only slightly more than their rated current during a fault, so a relay tuned for a coal or gas station may never pick up. Engineers have to rethink selectivity, the principle that the relay nearest the fault trips first, and often turn to differential protection or communication-assisted schemes. Settings inside the plants matter just as much. Great Britain learned this on 9 August 2019, when a lightning strike set off a chain that cut supply to more than a million customers; Ofgem's investigation found that an estimated 350 to 430 MW of distributed generation tripped off unnecessarily because its loss-of-mains protection was set to react to a small rate of change of frequency.

What the work involves

A protection engineer's week mixes studies, settings, and site work. Studies mean short-circuit and coordination calculations in tools such as PowerFactory, ETAP, or PSS/E. Settings mean producing and checking relay parameter files for manufacturers such as SEL, Siemens, Hitachi Energy, or GE Vernova, and configuring IEC 61850 communication inside digital substations. Site work means secondary injection testing, end-to-end tests of line differential schemes, and commissioning new bays at wind and solar connection points. Post-event analysis, reading disturbance records to explain why a breaker did or did not open, is where senior engineers earn their reputation.

Who is hiring

Network owners and generators with large wind fleets dominate the listings. Iberdrola, through Scottish Power and its network arm, recruits protection engineers in Glasgow and Cambuslang for the grid in central and southern Scotland, and SSE Renewables hires from Perth, where hydro and pumped storage schemes add their own protection requirements. Engineering firms Ulteig in the United States and Spark Power in Alberta design and test protection for utility-scale renewables, while SPIE Wind, Semco Maritime, and EDP Renewables recruit field engineers for turbine and substation work. Most roles sit close to substation engineering teams.

Skills that command a premium

Protection is a specialist trade with a long learning curve, and experienced engineers are hard to replace. The profile employers compete for combines a degree in electrical engineering with power systems study skills, hands-on relay testing experience, and fluency in grid codes that now require wind and solar plants to ride through faults instead of disconnecting. As grids move towards less synchronous generation, protection work overlaps increasingly with smart grid automation and wide-area monitoring.
