Global battery energy storage system (BESS) installations reached 315 GWh in 2025 -- a 51% jump over the previous year -- and every gigawatt-hour deployed needs people to design, build, commission, and operate it. The EU alone added 27.1 GWh of new battery storage capacity in 2025, its twelfth consecutive record year. To meet 2030 flexibility targets, Europe's installed capacity must grow roughly tenfold from its current 77.3 GWh to around 750 GWh. That gap between where the market is and where it needs to be translates directly into hiring pressure.

What energy storage roles actually look like

The term "energy storage" covers a wider range of work than most candidates expect. At one end are battery engineers and electrochemists developing cell chemistries and battery management systems. At the other are project managers coordinating multi-year, grid-scale BESS installations that pair with solar or wind farms. Between those poles sit electrical engineers designing power conversion systems, field service technicians maintaining battery arrays across remote sites, and commercial analysts modelling energy trading strategies for storage assets.

The most common job titles on Rejobs reflect this breadth: Project Manager, Senior Electrical Engineer, Project Engineer, Asset Manager, and Field Service Technician all appear regularly. Roles requiring hands-on work -- commissioning battery containers, troubleshooting inverter faults, running SCADA diagnostics -- are growing fastest as the installed base expands beyond what existing teams can service.

Who is hiring

The employers posting the most energy storage positions span different segments of the value chain. Sunrun leads in volume, combining residential solar with battery installations across the US. Eos Energy Enterprises focuses on zinc-based battery manufacturing -- an alternative chemistry to lithium-ion that targets long-duration storage. Zenobe operates one of Europe's largest fleet and grid-scale battery portfolios from the UK. Industrial giants like Wartsila bring energy storage into their broader power plant and grid solutions offering, while sonnen and Skeleton Technologies represent the European hardware side -- home batteries and ultracapacitors respectively.

Pure-play storage developers like Plus Power and Clearway Energy Group hire heavily for site development, permitting, and interconnection roles. The common thread: nearly all these companies need people who understand both the electrical engineering and the commercial logic of storing and dispatching energy.

Where the growth is concentrated

Berlin, London, Houston, San Francisco, and Hamburg are the top five cities for energy storage job postings on Rejobs. The geographic split reflects where the industry's centres of gravity sit: Germany and the UK lead Europe's BESS deployment, while Texas and California dominate the US market, together accounting for over half of American installations.

But the map is shifting. The EU's 45% year-on-year growth in battery storage is pulling demand into markets like Italy, Spain, and the Nordics. Candidates willing to work across borders -- or in less obvious locations near large-scale project sites -- face considerably less competition than those targeting London or Berlin alone.

Skills that command a premium

The most sought-after combination in energy storage is power electronics expertise paired with software skills. Engineers who can design battery inverter systems and also write control algorithms for grid integration are scarce and paid accordingly. SCADA and data analytics ranked as the single most in-demand skill set for renewables through 2028 in a recent industry survey, and storage is where that demand is sharpest.

Beyond technical roles, the sector needs people who understand energy market regulation and trading. Storage assets earn revenue through grid services -- frequency response, capacity markets, arbitrage -- and optimising those revenue stacks requires a blend of energy economics, quantitative modelling, and market knowledge that few candidates have.

Beyond lithium-ion

While lithium-ion batteries dominate current deployments, the long-duration storage segment is opening new career paths. Flow batteries, compressed air, pumped hydro, and green hydrogen each require distinct technical expertise. Eos Energy's zinc-based systems, for instance, demand electrochemistry backgrounds that differ substantially from conventional lithium-ion work. As grids need 8-hour, 12-hour, and even multi-day storage, these alternative technologies are moving from pilot to commercial scale -- and hiring teams to match.

With over 150 giga-scale BESS projects in the development pipeline for 2026 alone, the bottleneck is increasingly people rather than technology. Candidates with relevant experience can afford to be selective about which part of the storage value chain interests them most.
