Energy Trading Jobs in Renewable Energy

Energy trading is the buying, selling, and hedging of wholesale electricity and related products, from gas and carbon allowances to certificates of origin, on exchanges and over the counter. In renewables the job is shaped by weather: a trader holding wind and solar output sells a volume that is only known hours ahead, so the work has moved towards the short-term markets. EPEX SPOT, which runs spot power markets across much of Europe, cleared a record 917.5 TWh in 2025, and its intraday segments grew from 214.5 TWh to 241.2 TWh in a single year.

What renewable energy traders do

A trader at a gas-fired plant decides when the plant runs. A renewable trader cannot decide output and manages forecast error instead: bidding into the day-ahead auction, then buying or selling the difference on the intraday market as weather forecasts update, and paying imbalance charges on whatever is left. The job got finer-grained on 1 October 2025, when the day-ahead market in 27 countries switched from hourly to 15-minute products. Four times as many products per day is one reason the exchange itself credits algorithmic trading, alongside renewables and storage, for intraday growth.

Storage has opened a second line of work. Traders and optimisation analysts now run battery energy storage systems as trading assets, charging and discharging across day-ahead, intraday, and balancing markets. On the longer-dated side, originators negotiate power purchase agreements with corporate buyers, and structurers price the shape and volume risk those contracts transfer from the generator.

Employers hiring energy traders

The employers split into four groups. Large generators such as Ørsted and Vattenfall run their own trading desks to route output from their wind and solar fleets into the market. Brokers such as OTC FLOW, headquartered in Amsterdam, hire sales traders for environmental commodities: EU ETS allowances, energy attribute certificates, biofuels, and biomethane. Commodity firms like Targray recruit junior traders for renewable fuels feedstock. Software companies form the fourth group: Volue builds trading and optimisation platforms, Granular Energy builds software for managing energy attribute certificates, and Gridmatic applies machine learning to power and battery trading.

The job titles show how wide the field has become. Alongside energy traders and trading analysts, employers advertise for originators, portfolio managers for trading and flexibility, credit and energy risk analysts, and a notable number of software engineers for trading systems and ETRM (energy trading and risk management) platforms. Amsterdam, London, Hamburg, and Berlin account for most of the European openings, with Houston the largest hub outside Europe.

Skills that command a premium

The scarcest profile combines market knowledge with code. A trader who can write Python, build a forecast-error model, and explain why a bidding zone went negative on a sunny Sunday is worth more than one who can do only one of those things, which is why desks increasingly hire from data science and physics backgrounds. Experience with an ETRM system and a grounding in risk management, particularly credit and collateral, opens the middle-office route for candidates who prefer not to trade.

The market keeps widening. EPEX SPOT admitted 46 new trading members in 2025 and ended the year with 455, a record, and each new participant, from battery owners to aggregators, needs someone to run its position.
