ABOUT THE ROLE

TransAlta is seeking an experienced Senior Strategic Sourcing Specialist to support a diverse and evolving portfolio. The initial focus may include Site Services, such as Electrical and Instrumentation, Scaffolding, Examination Services, Mechanical Services, Boiler Maintenance, and Environmental Testing Services. However, the role may also expand to categories across Engineering, Projects or or other areas as business priorities shift.

The successful candidate will lead sourcing strategies, competitive bids, negotiations, and contracting initiatives to drive cost efficiency, manage risk, and ensure reliable supply. This role works closely with business stakeholders to align sourcing decisions with operational needs, manage key supplier relationships, and optimize total cost of ownership.

This role is based out of our head office in downtown Calgary with the flexibility of a hybrid work schedule (3 days in office & 2 days at home).

This is a permanent position.

A DAY IN THE LIFE

Here is some of the great work you will be responsible for, but not limited to:

Strategic Sourcing

  • Conduct structured analysis of the assigned portfolio and develop sourcing strategies using stakeholder input, data, and market insights.
  • Lead sourcing initiatives (RFx) development, proposal evaluations, and commercial negotiations to achieve the best overall value for TransAlta while meeting business, legal, and regulatory requirements.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders to clarify scope, develop sourcing approaches, and align on commercial outcomes.
  • Build strong relationships with key suppliers to support operational and project needs.
  • Contribute to category or supplier performance initiatives that support broader SCM objectives.

Contracting & Commercial Management

  • Lead the development, negotiation, and execution of complex agreements, including MSAs and stand-alone contracts.
  • Structure compensation models and commercial terms that support business objectives and reduce operational risks.
  • Provide commercial advice to project and operations teams on pricing, risk mitigation, and contract strategy.
  • Ensure all procurement and contracting activities comply with internal policies and governance requirements.
  • Support the management of change orders, claims, and disputes in coordination with stakeholders and Legal as required.
  • Coordinate with key stakeholders during negotiations to ensure that business, legal and regulatory requirements are met.

Supplier & Stakeholder Relationship Management

  • Manage strategic supplier relationships and key contracts to ensure performance, delivery, and value realization.
  • Coordinate effective engagement between suppliers and internal teams.
  • Facilitate regular business reviews, and performance discussions with critical suppliers.
  • Build strong relationships with internal stakeholders to align SCM strategies with business priorities.

ABOUT YOU

  • Minimum 12 years of progressive experience in Supply Chain with a focus on strategic sourcing and contract management.
  • Experience supporting internal stakeholders within utilities, services, or manufacturing environments.
  • Strong knowledge of sourcing, contracting, and supplier performance management practices.
  • Proven ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with the cross-functional teams during complex sourcing and negotiation process.
  • Demonstrated experience developing and managing complex contracts and commercial models, with the ability to identify and address key legal and commercial issues.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities with strong organizational and time-management skills.
  • Demonstrated capability to assess and manage risk while balancing business requirements.
  • Strong ability to influence, negotiate and gain alignment with a variety of stakeholders, including senior leadership.
  • Proven ability to initiate, lead and adapt to change in a complex environment.
  • Experience with Ariba and SAP is considered an asset.
