Administration & Business Support Jobs in Renewable Energy
Administration and business support in renewable energy covers office administration, executive assistance, and the coordination that keeps developers, utilities, and installers running, from supplier invoices and contracts to diaries and site correspondence. It is also the part of the sector closest to gender parity: IRENA's 2025 gender review found that women hold 45% of administrative roles in renewable energy, against 28% of STEM positions and 19% of senior leadership. The further a role sits from the office and the closer to the board or the turbine, the fewer women hold it.
What the work involves
The job titles look generic: Administrative Assistant, Office Manager, Executive Assistant, Office Coordinator, and Teamassistenz in German listings. The content is not. A wind or solar developer pays lease instalments to dozens of landowners, corresponds with grid operators and permitting authorities, and processes invoices from turbine, module, and civil works suppliers, and its support staff keep those records complete and on time. Project and site administrators sit closer to delivery, tracking purchase orders, timesheets, and subcontractor paperwork on construction projects, which puts them in daily contact with project management teams. Executive assistants at utilities and developers handle the board-level side of the same work: investment committee papers, travel across several countries, and meetings with lenders and public authorities.
Who is hiring
The employers behind the most listings over the past year are a mix of developers, utilities, grid operators, and installers. German wind and solar developer UKA leads, followed by US utility-scale solar contractor SOLV Energy, Iberdrola, Vattenfall, and Canadian Solar. Grid operators TransGrid in Australia and Enexis in the Netherlands and the German residential installer 1KOMMA5° complete the list.
Germany dominates the map. Berlin and Hamburg alone produce more listings than any city outside the country, with Dresden, Munich, and Düsseldorf close behind, and the demand has a clear source: renewable energy employment in Germany reached a record 436,000 people in 2025, according to calculations for the Bertelsmann Stiftung, with wind alone accounting for 172,000. Titles such as Sachbearbeiter:in in der Energiewirtschaft and Personalsachbearbeiter show that many of these roles are advertised in German and require it. Outside Germany, the hubs are Montreal, Gentofte near Copenhagen, Singapore, Prague, and London.
Skills that set candidates apart
Pay in business support tracks the general office market rather than carrying a sector premium, so the differentiator is familiarity with how an energy company works. Candidates who can run an ERP system, keep a document control register, and read a grid connection offer or a supplier contract without a translator are the ones developers shortlist. The boundaries with neighbouring functions are loose, particularly at smaller companies: HR Generalist and Senior Accountant titles appear in the same data, and many assistants move on into human resources and recruitment or accounting and finance once they know the business.
Outlook
Support headcount follows the project pipeline rather than leading it. Global renewable energy employment grew just 2.3% to 16.6 million jobs in 2024, IRENA and the ILO report, as automation and cheaper equipment held back hiring even while installations hit a record. Where investment is still rising, as in German wind, the offices behind the projects keep expanding; where it stalls, the support roles stall with it.
