Power Electronics jobs in renewable energy

Power Electronics Jobs in Renewable Energy

Power electronics is the engineering of converters, inverters, rectifiers, drives, and the semiconductor switches inside them, which turn the variable DC or AC from solar panels, batteries, and wind turbines into power the grid can accept. Almost every new renewable megawatt passes through such a device. The IEA's Renewables 2025 expects global renewable capacity to grow by 4,600 GW by 2030, with solar PV, which cannot reach the grid without an inverter, accounting for almost 80% of that increase.

What the work involves

The discipline runs from the chip to the substation. Design engineers choose converter topologies, size magnetics and cooling, and test for electromagnetic compatibility. Firmware engineers write the control loops that decide, thousands of times a second, how an inverter responds to a voltage dip or a frequency change. That control layer has become the centre of gravity in the field: as synchronous generators close, grid operators increasingly ask inverters to behave like them, and "grid-forming" capability now appears in the specifications of many battery tenders. The field is therefore a blend of analogue hardware and embedded software, with close ties to electronics and embedded systems and control and automation.

Wide-bandgap semiconductors are the main technology shift. Silicon carbide switches run at higher voltages and temperatures with lower losses than silicon IGBTs, which makes them attractive in central solar inverters, battery converters, and fast EV chargers, while gallium nitride is gaining ground in small, high-frequency devices such as microinverters. Engineers who understand device behaviour, not only circuit simulation, are the scarce profile.

The other half of the job market is in the field. Solar technicians, electricians, and field service engineers install, commission, and repair inverters and power conversion systems on site, and those titles account for a large share of the listings tagged with power electronics on Rejobs.

Who is hiring

The employer list shows how many technologies depend on the same skills. AEG Power Solutions, with its main plant in Belecke, Germany, builds power supplies and rectifiers for industry and electrolysis. Enphase makes microinverters, and Lunar Energy in Mountain View designs home battery and inverter systems. In storage, Fluence and Eos Energy Enterprises hire for battery energy storage systems, while Ohmium, which hires heavily in Bengaluru, and Bloom Energy need rectifier and converter expertise for electrolysers and fuel cells. Developers and operators such as NextEra Energy and Invenergy hire the field technicians who keep fleets of inverters running.

A shortage that predates the boom

Recruitment in Europe was already difficult before the current build-out peaked. An IPC survey reported by PCIM in January 2023 found that 57% of European companies were finding it increasingly hard to recruit power electronics staff, and the German engineering association VDE put the country's gap at over 100,000 electronics engineers over a decade. With inverter-based generation set to supply a growing share of electricity, engineers who can write grid-forming control firmware and prove it in grid-code compliance testing are likely to remain the most sought-after specialists in the field.
