Technical Writing & Documentation Jobs in Renewable Energy

Technical writing and documentation in renewable energy means producing and controlling the manuals, work instructions, safety procedures, and project records that let turbines, inverters, and substations be installed, operated, and serviced correctly. It splits into two professions that rarely share a job ad: technical writers, who author the content, and document controllers, who make sure the right revision of every drawing and certificate reaches the right person. Both are small fields; tekom, the German technical communication association, reckons an industrial company needs technical writers equal to about 1.3% of its workforce.

Technical writers at manufacturers

Writers work mostly for equipment makers. A wind turbine OEM such as Nordex or Vestas ships each platform with separate installation, commissioning, operation, and service manuals, and every design change ripples through all of them. The readers are field staff, often wind turbine technicians working at height in a second language, so writers spend as much time with service teams as with engineers, and simplified technical English and illustration-heavy formats are standard. Smart-meter maker Landis+Gyr and control-system suppliers such as KK Wind Solutions hire for the same reasons in electronics and software.

German postings use their own title, Technischer Redakteur, and Germany dominates the listings: Berlin, Hamburg, Dresden, Leipzig, and Unterhaching near Munich lead the European listings. The German profession has its own qualifications and the tekom association, and a degree in technical communication is a genuine advantage there in a way it rarely is in the UK.

Regulation drives the work

Most documentation exists because law requires it. The EU's Machinery Regulation 2023/1230, which replaces the Machinery Directive from 20 January 2027, applies to wind turbines and much of the equipment around them and, for the first time, allows instructions for use to be supplied in digital form. Manufacturers are rebuilding their documentation for that: moving from PDF manuals to structured, component-based content that can be served on a tablet on site, versioned by turbine serial number, and translated at scale. Writers with experience in DITA, XML authoring tools, and content management systems are the ones this shift favours.

Document control on projects

Document controllers are the larger group by number of postings. On construction projects run by EPC contractors and developers such as SOLV Energy, UKA, and BayWa r.e., they manage the flow of drawings, datasheets, inspection records, and as-built files between client, contractor, and subcontractors, and assemble the handover dossier without which an asset cannot be accepted into operation. The role is close to quality assurance and EPC management, and experienced controllers often move into project administration or quality roles.

Skills that pay

For writers, the premium goes to people who can read an electrical schematic or a hydraulic diagram without help, and who can write safety instructions that survive a risk assessment. For document controllers, fluency in systems such as Aconex or SharePoint-based document management and a record of closing out handover on a large offshore or utility-scale project counts for more than any certificate. Both roles are well suited to people moving in from aerospace, automotive, or oil and gas, where documentation standards are as strict or stricter, and both feed into training and workforce development roles once the content turns into courses.
