  • Product Development Jobs in Renewable Energy

Product development in renewable energy covers the full cycle of designing, prototyping, testing, and launching the hardware and software that make clean energy systems work - from inverters and battery modules to energy management platforms and grid-edge devices. The Europe energy management systems market alone reached $17.3 billion in 2025, growing at 12.9% annually, and every segment of that market needs product professionals who understand both the technology and the customer.

What makes product development different in renewables

The energy transition compresses product lifecycles. A solar inverter manufacturer releasing a new generation every 18 months must navigate evolving grid codes, shifting subsidy regimes, and component supply chains that span three continents. Product teams work at the intersection of deep engineering constraints and fast-moving regulatory environments, which means roles here demand more technical fluency than in most consumer product contexts.

Physical and digital products increasingly converge. Companies like Landis+Gyr build smart meters whose value depends as much on the firmware and data platform as on the hardware. Uplight and gridX develop energy management software where product managers must translate complex grid logic into interfaces that homeowners and utilities can actually use. This hybrid nature - part embedded systems, part SaaS, part regulated infrastructure - distinguishes renewable energy product development from mainstream tech.

Who hires and what roles look like

The most common title is Product Manager, followed by Senior Product Designer, Product Owner, and Product Marketing Manager. Berlin, Hamburg, and Munich concentrate the highest volume of openings, with London, Amsterdam, and San Francisco as secondary hubs. Employers range from wind component specialists like KK Wind Solutions and Nordex to energy software firms like EnergyHub and home energy startups like Lunar Energy.

Senior product managers in cleantech command base salaries of $160,000-195,000 in the US, with European equivalents typically 15-25% lower in nominal terms but competitive when adjusted for benefits and working conditions. The 68% of renewable energy employers who cite talent shortages as their primary growth bottleneck are increasingly willing to pay premiums for candidates with domain-specific product experience.

    Skills that set candidates apart

Pure product methodology - roadmapping, user research, sprint planning - is table stakes. What differentiates candidates is understanding of power electronics, grid interconnection standards, or battery chemistry well enough to make sound trade-off decisions without deferring everything to engineering. Roles at companies like 1KOMMA5° or Bloom Energy explicitly require familiarity with energy markets and hardware development cycles.

The convergence of AI with energy systems is creating a new category of product roles. Predictive maintenance platforms, demand response optimisation, and virtual power plant orchestration all need product managers who can bridge machine learning capabilities with operational realities of the grid.

    Where the field is heading

EU cleantech venture investment shifted to €1.8 billion in Q1 2025, with Energy & Power capturing 53% of the total. Germany led with 36 deals, followed by the Netherlands and France. As the sector matures from deployment to optimisation, product development roles are shifting from "build the first version" toward lifecycle management, platform integration, and regulatory compliance - the kind of work that rewards domain expertise accumulated over years, not months.
