  • Asset Management Jobs in Renewable Energy

Asset management in renewable energy covers the financial and operational oversight of power-generating infrastructure - wind farms, solar parks, battery storage systems, and hydroelectric plants - to maximise output and investor returns over asset lifespans that typically stretch 25 to 35 years. The global renewable energy asset management market reached $9.85 billion in 2024 and is growing at over 13% annually as installed capacity worldwide continues to expand.

What asset managers do in this sector

The role sits at the intersection of finance, engineering, and operations. A typical asset manager monitors energy yield against forecasted production, manages O&M contracts, tracks warranty claims, ensures regulatory compliance, and reports to investors or lenders. The "commercial" variant focuses on revenue optimisation - managing power purchase agreements, trading strategies, and merchant price exposure. "Technical" asset managers work closer to the plant, analysing SCADA data, coordinating maintenance schedules, and diagnosing underperformance.

This dual nature distinguishes the field from traditional financial asset management. A wind asset manager who cannot read a power curve or interpret turbine availability data is as limited as one who does not understand project finance covenants. The combination of technical fluency and financial acumen is precisely what makes these professionals hard to replace.

    Who is hiring

Roles span from large IPPs and utilities to specialised O&M firms and infrastructure funds. European Energy A/S and BayWa r.e. are among the most active European employers, while TransAlta and Clearway Energy Group represent North American fleet operators with diverse technology portfolios. Battery storage is creating its own management niche - companies like Plus Power and Zenobē hire specifically for BESS asset management, a category that barely existed five years ago.

    In-demand role variations

The most frequently listed titles reflect the field's breadth: Asset Manager, Commercial Asset Manager, Technical Asset Manager, and BESS Field Manager. Analyst and associate roles provide entry points, while Head of Asset Management and Senior Asset Manager positions appear at companies scaling their operational portfolios. The growing presence of BESS Field Manager postings signals how storage assets are generating entirely new management categories with their own technical requirements.

    Where the jobs are concentrated

Asset management roles cluster in markets with significant installed capacity. London, Glasgow, Hamburg, Berlin, and Madrid are the primary European hubs. Sydney leads in the Asia-Pacific, reflecting Australia's rapid renewables deployment. In North America, Houston, San Francisco, and Chicago all feature prominently - a spread that mirrors the geographic diversity of US renewable portfolios.

    Market outlook

Global energy transition investment reached a record $2.3 trillion in 2025, and every new GW of capacity commissioned adds to the pool of assets requiring professional management. Europe accounts for 30% of the global asset management market, valued at $2.96 billion in 2024 and projected to reach $10.70 billion by 2034. The employment shift is structural: as portfolios mature past construction, the balance moves from EPC and development toward long-term operations management and portfolio management.

Professionals who combine risk management expertise with hands-on technical understanding - those who can translate SCADA dashboards into boardroom language - remain consistently in short supply across European and global markets.
