Utility-scale Solar Jobs in Renewable Energy

Utility-scale solar is the development, construction, and operation of ground-mounted PV power plants that sell electricity into the wholesale market or under long-term contracts, typically tens to hundreds of megawatts on one site. In Europe it has overtaken rooftops. According to SolarPower Europe figures reported by pv magazine, large-scale plants made up more than half of the EU's 65.1 GW of new solar in 2025 for the first time, while home rooftops fell to 14% of additions.

What the work involves

A utility-scale project passes through three phases, each with its own job market. Development takes years: securing land, environmental surveys, planning consent, and a grid connection, followed by the revenue contract that makes the plant financeable. Construction takes months: civil works and fencing, pile driving, tracker and module assembly, medium-voltage cabling, and a substation, usually delivered under an EPC contract (engineering, procurement, and construction by one contractor). Operation lasts 30 years or more, run by solar operations and maintenance teams that manage inverters, trackers, vegetation, and the performance data of the whole fleet.

That structure explains the unusually wide range of titles in this category on Rejobs. Construction sites hire general labourers, civil superintendents, commissioning superintendents, and site managers who are qualified electrical supervisors. Development teams hire development managers, analysts, and grid engineers, and owners hire asset managers, FP&A analysts, project finance associates, and senior counsel, because each plant is a financial asset worth tens or hundreds of millions.

Who is hiring

The largest hirers in the past year are US contractors and developers. SOLV Energy, Signal Energy, and Strata Clean Energy build large solar and storage plants, and field service roles for technicians who travel between sites appear regularly. Terabase Energy develops robotic assembly systems for utility-scale construction, a sign of how labour-intensive the build still is. Clearway Energy Group, Invenergy, and Arevon develop and own portfolios, and Ulteig provides engineering. In Europe, the German EPC contractor GOLDBECK SOLAR hires across several countries, and London, Hamburg, and Milan are the leading European locations.

A market shaped by price and storage

The pipeline is large and global. The IEA's Renewables 2025 expects solar PV to account for almost 80% of the 4,600 GW of renewable capacity added worldwide by 2030. But more solar in the same hours depresses midday power prices, and the IEA notes that negative prices at peak solar output are surging in several countries. That changes what developers hire for: people who can structure power purchase agreements with corporate buyers, model merchant risk, and design hybrid plants that pair PV with batteries to sell power in the evening. On the construction side, experience with high-voltage connections and tracker systems is what separates a candidate for a 200 MW site from one suited to commercial rooftops.
