    What battery technology roles involve

    The range is wider than many candidates expect. Battery test engineers run charge-discharge cycling, thermal abuse protocols, and cell characterisation in laboratory settings. Process engineers optimise electrode coating, cell assembly, and formation processes in gigafactory environments. Safety engineers assess thermal runaway risks and design mitigation systems for large-scale battery energy storage systems (BESS). On the project side, BESS project engineers handle site design, grid connection studies, and commissioning of utility-scale installations that can exceed 100 MW.

    What distinguishes battery work in renewable energy from adjacent industries like consumer electronics is scale and consequence. A laptop cell failing is an inconvenience; a 200 MWh grid storage system failing is a safety event and a grid reliability problem. This raises the bar for thermal management, battery management systems, and process quality - and explains why employers struggle to fill roles that require both electrochemistry knowledge and systems-level engineering thinking.

    Who is hiring

    European battery hiring clusters around manufacturing and deployment hubs. Verkor in Grenoble is scaling its gigafactory and has been among the most active recruiters, alongside Zenobē in London, which focuses on fleet and grid-scale storage. Skeleton Technologies in Tallinn and ACCURE Battery Intelligence in Aachen represent the specialist end - ultracapacitors and battery analytics software respectively. Eos Energy Enterprises, Factorial Energy, and Voltfang round out the hiring picture across zinc-based batteries, solid-state development, and second-life storage systems.

    Grenoble, London, and Aachen are the top European hiring locations for battery technology roles on Rejobs, followed by Skellefteå (home to Northvolt's operations) and Stockholm.

    In-demand roles and skills

    The most frequently listed titles include battery test engineer, PV and battery storage technician, safety engineer for battery storage systems, process engineer, and development engineer. The intersection of lithium-ion battery expertise with power electronics or grid integration knowledge commands a premium - employers report that candidates who can bridge cell-level chemistry and system-level electrical engineering are the hardest to recruit.

    A 2024 industry survey found that 82% of battery companies reported shortages of skilled applicants. The greatest gaps are in electrochemistry, battery chemistry, battery management systems, and manufacturing process design. The European Commission's Pact for Skills set a target of upskilling 800,000 workers for battery production - a figure that reflects how far the workforce lags behind deployment plans.

    Where the field is heading

    Solid-state batteries and flow batteries are creating new specialisation tracks alongside the dominant lithium-ion chemistry. Battery recycling is emerging as a distinct career path as the EU Battery Regulation requires collection and material recovery targets from 2027 onward. Meanwhile, the shift from residential to utility-scale deployment - front-of-meter systems accounted for 55% of new EU installations in 2025 - is pulling demand toward project engineering, grid integration, and energy trading roles that barely existed five years ago.
