  • Distributed Energy Resources Jobs in Renewable Energy

Distributed energy resources (DER) professionals design, deploy, and manage the small-scale generation and storage assets - rooftop solar arrays, battery systems, EV chargers, heat pumps - that collectively reshape how electricity grids operate. The global virtual power plant market alone reached $6.28 billion in 2025, with Europe commanding a 41.54% share, and the sector's compound annual growth rate exceeds 22%.

What distinguishes DER work from conventional power engineering is its two-directional complexity. Traditional grid operators managed electricity flowing in one direction: from large power stations to consumers. DER professionals must orchestrate thousands of assets that both consume and produce power, often simultaneously. This requires a blend of power systems knowledge, software proficiency, and commercial understanding that few other energy roles demand in the same combination.

What the roles look like in practice

The field spans hardware and software in roughly equal measure. On the physical side, engineers design microgrid configurations, size battery systems, and commission behind-the-meter installations. On the digital side, product managers and software engineers build the distributed energy resource management systems (DERMS) that aggregate, forecast, and dispatch these assets as virtual power plants. The DERMS market is projected to reach $2.76 billion by 2033, growing at a 16.7% CAGR - a trajectory that translates directly into hiring demand for engineers who understand both grid physics and cloud architecture.

Frequent job titles on Rejobs include Development Engineer, Senior Product Lead for Distributed Generation, Applications Engineer, and Electrical Systems Design Engineer. Contracts managers are also in high demand, reflecting the commercial complexity of multi-asset DER portfolios.

    Who is hiring

EnergyHub, a New York-based demand-side management platform with 101-250 employees, has been the most active recruiter on Rejobs with 21 DER-related positions in the past year. Scale Microgrids focuses on commercial and industrial microgrid deployments across the US. In Europe, ADS-TEC Energy develops battery-based ultra-fast charging and storage platforms from its German base, while Invinity Energy Systems builds vanadium flow batteries for grid-scale and commercial applications in the UK. Bloom Energy brings a different approach with solid-oxide fuel cell technology deployed as distributed generation.

    Policy momentum driving demand

The European Commission's 2025-2026 legislative agenda directly supports DER growth. The proposed shift from 'first-come-first-served' to 'first-ready-first-served' grid connection rules should accelerate deployment of storage and distributed generation assets. The revised Renewable Energy Directive explicitly promotes integrating DER - including EVs, photovoltaic systems, and heat pumps - across demand sectors. Combined with the upcoming Electrification Strategy and Grids Package, these regulations are creating sustained demand for professionals who can navigate both technical and regulatory complexity.

    Skills that command premiums

The convergence of operational technology and information technology is the defining trend. Engineers who can work across SCADA systems, IoT sensor networks, and cloud-based optimisation platforms are particularly scarce. Experience with demand response programme design, wholesale energy market participation rules, and cybersecurity for distributed assets adds further value. As utilities increasingly adopt smart energy systems, the ability to translate between grid operators, software teams, and asset owners distinguishes the most sought-after candidates.
